Labour and Employment Law

The Myers Weinberg labour group has a long history of exclusively representing trade unions, professional associations and their member employees in a broad range of labour and employment law matters. Mel Myers, the Firm's founding labour lawyer, was instrumental in establishing the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers and was the first Chairperson of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission. Members of our labour group continue to uphold Mel's values as we advocate exclusively for the rights of working people.
Our labour department provides complete services in all labour and employment fields and forums. In addition to representing unions in grievance and interest arbitrations and matters before the provincial and federal labour boards, we offer advice on collective bargaining strategies, occupational health and safety, human rights and other matters related to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, privacy issues, health and welfare plans, pension plans and legislation, workers' compensation, and construction labour relations. Members of our labour department regularly appear in provincial and federal court on matters related to judicial review applications, appeals and injunctions. Our union clients range from large national and international trade unions and their locals, to professional associations and small independent unions. Our clients represent members in public services, education, emergency and essential services, medical and hospital settings, industrial plants, transportation, the aerospace industry, construction trades and many other private industries and public sector workplaces.
Members of our labour department also represent individual non-unionized employees in actions for wrongful dismissal and complaints related to employment standards as well as reviews of employment contracts and negotiations with their employers. In addition to providing legal services, our labour department works with unions, their executives and shop stewards to assist them in developing their knowledge of labour issues and to ensure they are kept current respecting the constant and ongoing changes which impact today's workplaces. To that end, we organize and host the annual Mel Myers Labour Conference.
In addition to our annual conference, members of our labour department conduct a number of seminars each year which focus on more narrow or specialized topics. We regularly appear as speakers and panelists at other labour and employment law seminars and conferences held by our clients and are frequently requested to speak at conferences or prepare materials for other organizations that provide educational seminars to their respective clients.
